Fairbanks — Morse locomotives, commonly known as F-Ms, are true classics (their newest models are nearly 70 years old now), even by non-railfans! While its opposed-piston engine was not as successful in railroading applications as in marine ships its locomotives were nevertheless revolutionary for their time. So revolutionary that it would take twenty years after the builder’s exit from the market for railroads to become interested powerful, six-axle designs. Today the builder, now owned by EnPro Industries, continues to build marine engines and prime movers used in other applications. While Fai

Production of the Fairbanks Morse Model 32 engine began in the mid-1920s. The engine was used to do everything from generating power to crushing rocks. Some Model 32 engines are still in use today. The Company began producing oil and naptha engines in the 1890s. The Fairbanks Morse gas engine became a success providing power for irrigation, electricity generation, and oilfield work. Small power plants built by Fairbanks Morse were popular and evolved by burning kerosene in 1893, coal gas in 1905, and semi-diesel in 1913. After the expiration of Rudolf Diesel’s American license in 1912, Fairbanks Morse entered the large engine business.

Fairbanks , Morse and Company was an American manufacturing company in the late 19th and early 20th century. Originally a weighing scale manufacturer, it later diversified into pumps, engines , windmills, coffee grinders, radios, farm tractors, feed mills, locomotives, and industrial supplies until it was purchased by Penn Texas in 1958 and later, in 1999, by Goodrich Corp. It used the trade name Fairbanks — Morse .

The main engines of the Tanu are Fairbanks Morse engines built in Dorval, Quebec. I had heard quite a deal about them, because they are of an interesting design for a diesel engine . The Tanu, along with it's sister ship on the east coast, have two such engines . I understand that these engines are somewhat common in industry. It's welded design make this engine easy to build and repair. At the time of it's introduction, the size to power ratio was quite impressive. As with all two stroke engines , these Fairbanks Morse cannot function without the help of a supercharger. On these engines the positive charge of air is provided by a single roots type blower. The blower is mounted on the driving end and driven by the top crankshaft.

Fairbanks — Morse is a storied name in the world of diesels, and it has celebrated over 100 years building diesels. The company goes back to 1832, when Thaddeus Fairbanks opened an iron-working shop in Vermont. Fairbanks eventually expanded into building weight scales, which formed the cornerstone of his early success. Charles Morse , a longtime Fairbanks employee, eventually partnered with Thaddeus to form Fairbanks Morse & Company. Fairbanks Morse (FM) manufactured a huge array of metal products besides scales and by the late 1800s, was one of the largest manufacturers in the USA. The 1936 Fairbanks Morse Model 32D Stationary Engine is a classic piece of machinery that had 6 cyclinders! Built by the Fairbanks Morse & Company, which originated in 1832, when Thaddeus Fairbanks first patented the platform scale. A diesel engine doesn’t have to be encased in sheet metal or be on a railroad track to be admired! The Fairbanks Morse Model 32D Stationary Engines were built for service in power stations, pumping stations and manufacturing plants, among other uses. They were very reliable and required very little maintenance due to their all cast iron construction. The engines we

I have located a Fairbanks Morse 3HP 450 RPM engine in about 70ft of water I believe it was part of a wreck that went down in the early 1900's In order to correctly identify the wreck I need to be certian that this engine was purchased for it. There was no serial number on the plate of the engine but the division of Fairbanks Morse was in Canada. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Heinz. Are you trying to detirmine the exact date that engine was built or delivered? If you are trying to verify that the engine was sold to the owners/builders of that vessel . I would say it would be difficult if the engine had a serial number and impossible if it doesn't. Regards, Andrew. richarddurgee. Posted on Wednesday, January 09, 2002 — 07:46 pm
